The American College of Prosthodontists estimates that more than 36 million Americans do not have any of their natural teeth and millions of others are missing some teeth. For many of the edentulous, dentures restore some chewing function, natural appearance, and confidence. Implant dentist, Dr. Sanjeev Goel, explains how Cincinnati patients can enjoy even greater comfort and function from their dentures.

The Problem With Dentures . . .

In general, dentures require a bit of adaptation –feel, salivation, speaking, eating, and hygiene. Most patients get used to them quickly. However, a common complaint is the instability of dentures, especially a lower plate. Wearers rely on gravity, natural suction, and gooey pastes to keep dentures in place. Even well designed, snug-fitting dentures can slip forward or side to side, wobble, or pop out unexpectedly. That means sore spots and an occasional embarrassing surprise.

Dental Implants to the Rescue!

A dental implant is a small cylinder made of strong, biocompatible material. In a brief surgical procedure, it is placed into the jawbone, and the bone fuses solidly with the implant over time. Capped with a porcelain crown, a dental implant is the preferred option to replace a single missing tooth. However, just a few dental implants can hold a denture in place with a level of stability never before possible. The inside of the denture is fitted with attachment points that snap over posts on each implant.

Chewing function improves dramatically, and the self-confidence of the wearer soars! Implants also stimulate healthy bone density, much like the roots of a tooth.
